Favourite baby names

Tradition still tends to rule when it comes to choosing a baby name in the UK. Even when some celebrities give their babies exotic or eccentric names, the rest of the nation is more conservative in naming their babies.

Deciding which name to give your baby is an important decision as this will remain with your child for the rest of his or her life. Cultures vary as to how much importance is attached to a baby name, for example in China, great importance is given to baby name meaning as each person's name has a specific meaning and when translated into English can sometimes read like a small sentence! Parents in many cultures give their children meaningful baby names, but in the UK this is not a general trend. We're more likely to give the new baby a family name as the middle name rather than a first name with great meaning.

Jack, Thomas and Joshua are the most popular names for boys in the UK for the same trend in recent years, but for the girls it's all change. Grace has knocked Olivia off the number one spot, so the top three names are now Grace, Ruby and Olivia.
