When you create your baby’s nursery, you have a wide range of choices in not just baby bedding but also in cribs, cots and moses baskets.
Of course, your first priority will be child safety, followed by baby’s comfort.
There is a wide assortment of baby bedding available on the market today, but whatever you choose, the current recommendation is that babies should always be put to sleep on their backs. Many babies can roll from their sides onto their tummies, so they should not be put to sleep on their sides in case this happens. Newborn babies can't willingly manipulate themselves into or out of positions, so if they become trapped, entangled or uncomfortable they can't do anything about it. The easiest way to ensure this doesn't happen is to put baby to sleep on his back with his feet just touching the bottom of the crib, and the baby bedding tucked up to his chest.
Make sure your cot conforms to safety standard BSEN716. This means that the cot will be deep enough to be safe for your baby, and that the cot bars will be less than 45-65 mm apart. This is very important because your baby's head should not be able to fit between the bars.
This standard also means the paint will be lead free, and the mattress will fit snugly into the shape of the cot.
Make sure there are no sharp edges or holes that tiny fingers or toes could get caught on.
Check the bedding does not include trailing ribbons or strings of material to safeguard against baby putting them into his mouth.

These are bags that you zip or button baby into, so he can’t kick the bedding off. Great for keeping your child warm in winter, there are also lightweight summer versions available too. Younger child versions also include a handy zip so you can get in and change a nappy without disturbing baby by removing from the bag. Many bags come as matching nursery sets so you can co-ordinate with your baby nursery theme.
Want to know more about sleeping bags? At The Baby Show, a number of companies will be showing off their sleeping bags including:
A co-ordinated baby nursery can look so pretty and there are so many themes you can follow, from pale pastels to strong colours, modern minimalism to character crazy.
Acccessories can include baby bedding, curtains, cushions, rugs, blinds and more.
At The Baby Show, you’ll be spoilt for choice if you are looking for inspiration with exhibitors including:
The safest cot buys for your new baby should include a firm kind of mattress. Newborn babies cannot lift up their heads, so if squashed into a soft mattress won't be able to move into a clear comfortable position. Also, it is much easier for babies to roll over onto their stomachs in soft baby bedding. For this reason water beds and any other soft, pliable mattresses or bedding is not recommended for young babies.
When planning your baby furniture, think about whether you want to buy a cot or a cot bed. Cot beds can look enormous with a tiny baby but will last longer than a cot as you can put off buying a full-size bed until your child is three or four. Cots take up less space at a time when your baby nursery will be packed with changing table, feeding chair and more.
At The Baby Show, you’ll be able to go over the cot/cotbed options with lots of exhibitors, including:
Cribs are suitable for babies up to the age of six months but not beyond. Once your baby can sit or pull himself up, the crib should not be used. Cribs often come separately from baby bedding, flat-packed; some baby cribs include a mattress. Make sure you are able to assemble the crib correctly. You can turn your crib into highly attractive item of nursery furniture, with matching drapes and hoods, but always make sure the baby is safe and happy, and nothing hangs directly into her sleeping area.
Moses baskets can be an attractive and practical type of baby furniture for your new baby, and can make the transition into a proper bed or cot easier, since the moses basket can be placed directly into the new bed for gradual acclimatisation. When buying a moses basket, make sure the handles are attached firmly and that the basket itself has undergone treatment for fire resistance. Moses baskets are designed to hold your baby during the first few months of life and are very portable; so baby can sleep anywhere, but still stay within the familiarity of his own cosy basket.
A wide range of exhibitors at The Baby Show will be able to talk to you about moses baskets and beautiful matching baby bedding so book now!
