Do you know about Smart Cells?

The Baby Show | NEC 15 - 17 May | Do you know about Smart Cells?
Smart Cells was the first cord blood stem cell storage company in the UK. Smart Cells were also the first UK private company to have successfully released stored cord blood units to transplant centres worldwide, to treat children with a range of illnesses.

A baby’s umbilical cord is a valuable source of stem cells which can be collected and stored. These cells can then be used as a crucial part of treating or curing an illness. In its 19 years since the company was founded, Smart Cells has released samples to patients all over the world to treat a variety of conditions including Cerebral Palsy, Thalassemia, Leukaemia and HSV Encephalitis. Actress Charley Webb recently welcomed her third child, Ace, with her husband, Matthew Wolfenden. With this birth, Charley chose to store her son's stem cells with Smart Cells.

By choosing to store your newborn baby's umbilical cord stem cells at birth, you could help protect their health and even siblings’ health. Cord blood stem cell therapy has been successfully used to treat over 80 different diseases.

Charley discusses the reasons she chose to store her son's cells and how she found the whole process:

How did you find out about storing your baby's stem cells?
I've read a lot about storing stem cells over the last year. A friend of mine did it, and I began to research it.

Why did you decide to store your baby's stem cells?
We decided to store our baby's stem cells because it felt like the right thing to do for us. I did a lot of research, and for me, it was an option I wanted to use.

What has your experience been like with Smart Cells?
My experience has been amazing. Genuinely. It's been made so easy right from the start, and everyone's been so lovely and caring. Nothing felt stressful.

How important do you think it is to raise awareness of the benefits of storing umbilical cord blood stem cells?
I would love to raise more awareness for storing your baby's stem cells. I absolutely hope we never ever have to use them, but I'm a worrier and knowing that we have them there if we need them makes me feel so much better. I'd love it if more families could feel the same.

What would you say to a friend or colleague who was thinking of using Smart Cells?
I've already spoken to a few friends that are pregnant about storing their baby's stem cells. All of them have been so intrigued and are actually planning on doing it.

Is there anything else you wish to add?
Being a parent is the scariest thing in the world. I constantly worry about my children and about them getting poorly. This service is so so fantastic. I'm so grateful.
