How to Prepare for a Baby: Practical Steps for New Parents

How to Prepare for a Baby: Practical Steps for New Parents

For expectant dads and expectant mums, thinking about how to prepare for a baby is exciting, but it can also be overwhelming.

From birth stories to fitting the car seat, and breast feeding to building the cot... There is advice everywhere! But very little of it tells you clearly what actually matters. And almost none of it speaks directly to dads who want to step up but are not sure where they fit.

If you or your partner are expecting your first baby, here are the basics you need to focus on so you can feel confident and ready together

Because preparing for a baby is not just about buying things. It is about building confidence step by step.

What to Pack in Your Hospital Bag

Packing the hospital bag is one of those moments where it starts to feel real. It is an exciting step towards meeting your baby, but don't overthink it.

Mum's Bag:
Mum will want comfortable clothes, loose nightwear, maternity notes and birth plan, toiletries, snacks and drinks. Plus anything that helps her feel relaxed and supported during labour.
Dad's Bag:
Don't forget, Dads may need a bag too. Snacks, a phone charger and a change of clothes are essential. Labour can be long. You may even need to make a trip home, having your own bag makes this easy.

Your baby only needs the basics. A few sleepsuits and vests, a hat and scratch mittens, nappies, cotton wool or wipes, and something to come home in. Keep it simple.

For a full, sensible checklist, the NHS has a full list here.

What You Actually Need For Your Baby

It is very easy to feel like you need everything at once.

The reality is that starting with the fundamentals makes the biggest difference. A safe place to sleep. A properly fitted car seat. Nappies. A small rotation of basic clothing and feeding essentials will cover most of what you need in those first few weeks.

One of the simplest ways to get organised is seeing products in person, asking questions and comparing options side by side. You can find everything you need in one place at The Baby Show, from trusted brands to practical everyday essentials. With show exclusive pricing, it is also a great opportunity to secure the best prices on the essentials while you prepare.

Start with the basics. Build steadily. Preparation feels far more manageable when you approach it that way.

Setting Up Your Home to Prepare For A Baby

You do not need a perfectly finished nursery before your baby arrives. You need a home that works for you all!

Set up a safe sleep space. Install the car seat early and practise using it. Have nappies, wipes and a simple changing area ready. And prep and freeze few easy meals if you can - trust me, those easy to defrost and cook dinners will be a lifesaver in the early days!

Think practical, not perfect. The aim is simple. Reduce stress in those first few days so you can focus on your baby and support each other.

Talk About Expectations Early

One of the most important preparations has nothing to do with shopping.

Before your baby arrives, talk honestly about expectations. Discuss how you will split night feeds, when you want visitors and who it should be, and how you will support each other when you're both tired.

Clear conversations now make those first few weeks feel more like teamwork and less like survival mode.

How Dads Can Prepare For A Baby With Confidence

Modern fatherhood has changed. Gone are the days when men sat outside the labour room. That's why Dadvengers have developed an Expectant Fathers Course designed specifically to help dads feel prepared and a part of the process, rather than a spectator on the sidelines.

The course covers labour and practical support, but we also focus on something just as important. Your mindset. How to manage stress, look after yourself and stay steady when things feel intense.

They talk about communication too. How to support your partner without resentment building when you are both exhausted. How to stay connected as a couple while stepping into parenthood.

Preparation is not about knowing everything. It is about feeling grounded and capable when it matters.

If you are coming to The Baby Show, come and find us. Make sure you talk to them! They would love to chat and help you feel ready for what is ahead.
