Safe Medications in Pregnancy: What You Need to Know
)
When you are pregnant, it’s the natural thing to do to think twice about everything you put into your body and for most that includes medication. Whether it’s for a headache, hay fever, or heartburn, knowing what’s safe (and what’s not) can feel confusing, and with so much conflicting information being made available it’s no wonder you might be confused and concerned.
At My Expert Midwife, we know you want the best for your baby, and that includes keeping yourself well, too. So, here’s a simple guide, written by our Midwives, to understanding medication safety during pregnancy.
1. Not All Medications Are Off-Limits
A common myth is that you can’t take anything in pregnancy but that’s simply not true. Some medications are perfectly safe and may even be necessary. For example:
Paracetamol is considered safe for pain or fever when taken as directed, the MHRA has confirmed this in a statement following misinformation that was broadcast recently in America.
Antacids can help ease pregnancy heartburn. Speak to a pharmacist about what, when and how much to take and if over the counter remedies don’t work go back to your Midwife or GP.
Some antihistamines are safe for allergies, but always check with a pharmacist or your midwife first.
2. Always Check Before Taking Something New
Even over-the-counter remedies or herbal supplements can carry risks in pregnancy. Always speak to your midwife, GP, or pharmacist before starting any new medication or treatment, even if it’s “natural” or “herbal”.
3. Some Conditions Need On-going Treatment
If you’re already taking medication for conditions like asthma, diabetes, thyroid problems, or mental health, do not stop taking it suddenly. Many of these medicines are safe in pregnancy and stopping them could do more harm than good. Your GP or consultant can review your treatment to make sure it’s the best option for you and baby.
4. Your Midwife is There to Help
It’s always okay to ask questions, your midwife or GP can give clear, up-to-date advice tailored to your pregnancy. You can also ask your pharmacist about medication safety if you’re ever unsure.
Final Thoughts
Keeping yourself healthy during pregnancy is one of the best things you can do for your baby. Sometimes that means taking medication, and that’s okay when it is done safely and knowledgeably. You don’t need to suffer through pain, sleeplessness, fever, or discomfort. With the right support and information, you can make safe and informed choices that work for you.
