How to avoid information overload when weighing up baby products and services
Whether you’re expecting a baby or already navigating life with a newborn, attending a parenting or baby show can feel like stepping into a whirlwind. Hundreds of stands, endless “must haves” and advice at every turn. It’s exciting, but it can be overwhelming.
Louise King, baby massage expert from Basking Babies, is no stranger to baby shows, and with popular events like The Baby Show at ExCeL London around the corner, she’s sharing some simple, reassuring tips to help parents avoid information overload and get the most out of the experience.
1. Plan with purpose
Before you arrive, take a little time to think about what you actually want help with. Is it feeding? Sleep? Choosing a pram? Or simply finding support as a new parent? Having a few clear priorities makes navigating a busy show feel far more manageable and helps avoid getting swept up in every sales pitch.
A useful question to ask yourself is “What problem does this solve for me?” If you don’t have an answer, it’s probably a nice to have rather than a need, and that’s okay to leave behind.
2. Talk to people, not just brands
With so many displays to take in, it can feel intense, but conversations are often where the real value lies. Speaking directly to the people behind a product or service can give you a clear understanding of their purpose and whether it’s right for you.
For example, you’ll find a bunch of smiling faces at our stand H49 at The Baby Show! Whether you are curious about baby massage or looking for a supportive community to help navigate this new stage, our team and plenty of other brands will be there to support you, without any pressure.
3. Give yourself time to slow down
Remember to take breaks. Pregnant or post-partum - being on your feet is tiring! Give yourself time to sit down, bring snacks and pace yourself throughout the day. For example, if you’re at The Baby Show they have facilities such as the Baby Feeding Café as well as a specialised Baby Changing Area.
My top tip is to pick up lots of leaflets, this allows you to reflect and make decisions in your own time back in the comfort of your own home.
4. Use expert talks as a breather (and a takeaway)
As part of your pre-show planning, it’s worth checking the schedule of expert talks on offer. You can use this opportunity to gain helpful insights while also having a moment to sit down.
Basking Babies founder, Carla Davison, will be taking to the stage on Friday 6th March at 2:45 pm, sharing the benefits of baby massage. Her talk will cover simple techniques parents can try at home, alongside reassurance around bonding, confidence and connection.
You don’t need to leave a baby show with bags full of products to feel like the day was worthwhile – although it can also be a great place to grab a bargain. I recommend keeping an eye on the recommended retail price of the products you have your heart set on, so you know if you’re being offered a bargain on the day.
Also keep an eye out for digital goodie bags you can register for at the expo stands – the Basking Babies one is packed with discounts and special offers from a wide range of companies - all without weighing you down!
