Parenting the Kate Middleton way - Norland nanny shares 'super useful' childcare tips
KATE MIDDLETON and Prince William have employed Maria Borrallo as their nanny since Prince George was just a few months old in 2013.
Maria Borrallo trained at Norland College, which is a world-famous higher education college in Bath, training individuals to become world-class nannies. Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis are under the trusted care of a Norland nanny, which means they are receiving some of the top quality childcare in the world. Numerous royals have hired nannies from the prestigious college, which was founded in 1892 and combines an undergraduate degree with their own diploma, renowned for its theoretical and practical training.
Louenna Hood is one such ‘Norland nanny’ who trained at the Norland College and spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk about why Norland College is the best place to train as a nanny and offers top quality childcare.
Louenna said: “Norland College is a really tough course and I think you have to really want to be a nanny to finish the course.
“It shows childcare is really your passion and I personally I do not think there is another course like it in the world.
“I actually went to university after my A-Levels do Early Childhood Studies and I always knew that I wanted to be a nanny, but there is no practical training side to it at university at all.
“So that is why I switched to Norland College because you get that practical side throughout your whole training there, so it perfectly sets you up.
“When I was there a lot of the lecturers there were ‘Norlanders’ themselves so they had all the experience and I loved learning from them.
“It offers such an all-round curriculum because as a nanny you are cooking and doing things that are really important, and no other childcare courses cover all of that.”
Louenna told Express.co.uk that she always wanted to be a nanny from when she was a small child.
She continued: “I always, always, always wanted to be a nanny. I'm the oldest of four children and I've got three younger brothers and I was always obsessed with them, especially my youngest brother - I wouldn't put him down!
“It’s something that's within me, my parents have children, and my grandmother ran a children's nursery - so it is just innately within me.”
Louenna has created an app to help parents who want their children to be raised the way the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s children are being raised, but do not have access to a Norland nanny.
Being at Norland College enabled Louenna to receive all the practical training she needed to become a nanny as well as the theory behind it to help people in discussions about childcare.
Speaking about her app, Louenna said: “I set up my Instagram account and called it ‘Nanny Louenna’ and I was just posting one tip of advice a day, and yet I was getting hundreds of messages in my inbox from people who were saying, ‘I love your advice on this’, or ‘What would you do in this situation?’
“So I decided to create the app because I want families to enjoy their babies and their children.
I wanted to share my knowledge because I think it is all the little bits of advice that actually make a big difference.
“I started writing a book and then I just kept thinking you know how can I make this more interactive, and how can I make it so that people can get to the questions that they want about their child quickly?
“That is where I came up with the idea for the app so that it's always in your pocket - any question you have, you can read the app like a book if you want to and it is all in age and stage orders, so you can go straight to your child's age.
“Or you can just search for the question, so if you wake up and your child has chicken pocks and you think, ‘What would Louenna do?’ - if you Google it you are going to get 100 different answers from 100 different people, whereas I can say that this is the best product that I've used on the market, and it will be trusted advice.”
Kate Middleton has been massively praised by many parenting experts who appreciate her mothering skills, for example bending down to a child’s level to talk to them, and interacting with them positively.
George, Charlotte, and Louis will undoubtedly benefit from their parents’ style of parenting, with the added bonus of having a Norland nanny inside the house helping to raise the little ones.
Louenna added: “99 percent of people have a baby and have probably never held a baby before.
“So if you have someone like me who is trained and has done it so many times before, just having that guiding hand is going to be really helpful.
“No matter who I have worked for, all they want is the very best for their child and yet until they have actually done it, they do not know how to do what's best.
“So I would say having a guiding hand like a Norland nanny is super useful even if it is just to be on the end of the phone to answer a few questions.”
